Some women you know because of a headline. Others you know because of a feeling, the way a photo of them made you sit up a little straighter, or a caption made you screenshot it for later. The Wondrea Gilmore legacy falls squarely in that second category, and this week, women all over the plus-size community are feeling the weight of losing her.
Wondrea passed away on August 20, 2026, at 36 years old. Since then, tributes haven’t stopped, from her sorority sisters to her Miles College family to fans who only knew her through a scroll and a smile. So let’s take a minute, put the phone down, and actually talk about who she was.
Most people met Wondrea through a campaign photo or a magazine spread. But her story didn’t start there. It started at Miles College in 2007, where she was already everywhere: Purple Marching Machine, Student Government, Miss Sophomore. That early hustle turned into a full reign as Miss Miles College in 2010, and from there, it just kept building. A bachelor’s degree. An MBA. A move to Atlanta chasing modeling and acting work most people told plus-size women not to bother chasing.
She chased it anyway. That’s really the heart of the Wondrea Gilmore legacy… a woman who didn’t wait for the industry to make room for her, so she made her own.
A PMM Cover Girl, Through And Through
We’d be doing this whole thing wrong if we didn’t mention it: Wondrea was our December 2024 cover model, back when we were still PLUS Model Magazine. That cover wasn’t just a photoshoot for her, it was a full-circle moment, since she’d been part of this community long before the byline ever changed. We’re proud that cover exists, and we’re holding onto it a little tighter this week.
Ask anyone who actually knew Wondrea, not just followed her, and the modeling credits are there, however what comes up first is her mother. The two of them had the kind of bond people notice from across a room, and Wondrea never once acted like being a mama’s girl was something to downplay. What comes up next is her dogs, her sorors, her friends who somehow all felt like her closest friend. She had a gift for making people feel chosen.
That’s a harder thing to put on a résumé than a magazine cover. It might be the more important one.
Why This One Is Hitting So Hard
Miles College put out a statement extending condolences to her family, sorority sisters, classmates, and the Royal Court community she never stopped showing up for, even years after graduating.
For us in the plus size community, Wondrea was proof: proof that you could be dark-skinned and plus-size and still land the campaign, still book the cover, still walk into a room and own it. That kind of proof matters more than any single photo ever could.
Carrying It Forward
The Wondrea Gilmore legacy isn’t going to live in a headline that fades by next week. It’s going to live in every person who saw her, felt a little more possible because of it, and decided to stop shrinking herself too. That’s the assignment now. Take up space. Laugh loud. Wear the crown.
