PMMToday: Can you share the story of how you got started in the modeling industry?
Kimberly: I never considered modeling as a career, but a friend enlightened me on the rising popularity of the plus-size industry. She invited me to attend a show she was in. I accompanied her backstage, and the coordinator mistakenly thought I was a model. It turned out that one of the models was running late, so she asked me to step in for her first look. I was terrified, but I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity, so I agreed. This led to me getting signed with a local agency. My very first booking was a show at Saks Fifth Avenue. The commentator was Michele Weston, a major fashion editor for MODE Magazine. She was instrumental in helping me take my career to the next level. With her guidance, I landed my first editorial and connected with top agencies. Within months, I signed with Wilhelmina in New York and left my corporate job to pursue modeling full-time.
PMMToday: What were some of the initial challenges you faced as a curvy model, and how did you overcome them?
Kimberly: Curve modeling was a novelty when I started. Although we were finally being represented, the opportunities were limited. Many companies were hesitant to risk their brands and budgets on inclusivity. There were times when I was the only curve model booked, and I often felt like an afterthought. There wasn’t as much attention paid to detail with my look, as if I was just thrown in at the last minute or that the stylist didn’t know how to dress my fuller frame.
Additionally, there were inconsistent standards and a lack of clarity about what was considered “acceptable” within the plus-size category. Sometimes I was deemed “too small” or “too big” for what clients were looking for. I had to develop a strong mindset, learning the importance of self-worth, adaptability, and resilience. I embraced change without sacrificing authenticity and built meaningful relationships in the industry to navigate the business and find new opportunities. I’ve always appreciated the unique position I’m in, cherishing every opportunity, from bookings to even being considered. To maintain stability, I also pursued other interests outside modeling.

PMMToday: How have you seen the fashion and modeling industry evolve in terms of inclusivity and representation for curvy models?
Kimberly: While there’s been undeniable progress with increased visibility in mainstream campaigns and runway shows, the representation still feels somewhat tokenistic at times. It’s disappointing that after all these years, inclusivity isn’t completely commonplace. The plus-size industry is worth almost $300 billion, and the demand is there, but many brands still fail to offer a full range of sizes. Some scale back their production of larger sizes, or these options are only available online.
However, I commend the brands and designers who truly understand our needs, catering to a range of sizes, styles, ages, and demographics. A new generation of models and influencers has elevated the game. Social media platforms and publications like yours empower and encourage confidence, self-expression, and creativity, showing that representation matters. We’ve also stopped waiting for inclusion and started creating our own opportunities through companies, clothing lines, and agencies.
PMMToday: What role do you feel seasoned models like yourself play in continuing to push for representation?
Kimberly: Seasoned models like myself play a crucial role in championing representation. Sharing my knowledge and experiences with aspiring models empowers them while giving me valuable insights from their fresh perspectives. This mutual exchange fosters a supportive community.
My established industry connections also allow me to advocate for greater diversity and inclusivity. Whether it’s offering input on styling or exploring potential new clients to share with my agents, I’m always looking for ways to advance the industry.
Ultimately, my continued success demonstrates that age, shape, size, and color should not be barriers to a fulfilling modeling career. This inspires others and reinforces the demand for authentic representation.
PMMToday: You have a timeless glow—what does your beauty regimen look like?
Kimberly: Thank you! I use a gentle vitamin C cleanser, followed by a seaweed toner, and finish with a vitamin C moisturizer with sunscreen. Occasionally, I use serums, but I find it easier to stay consistent with fewer steps. I prioritize exercise, sleep, and staying hydrated throughout the day.
I also give my skin a break from makeup when I’m not working. When I do wear makeup, I prefer a stick foundation to conceal blemishes, followed by a skin tint or tinted moisturizer. I love multi-use sticks for eyes, cheeks, and lips—they’re so convenient.
PMMToday: How do you maintain your physical and mental well-being while balancing the demands of the modeling world?
Kimberly: I prioritize self-care by maintaining a consistent daily routine, focusing on rest, and unplugging when needed. Travel often provides valuable “me time” for relaxation and rejuvenation, ensuring I’m well-prepared for work.
PMMToday: Modeling can be demanding—how do you strike a balance between your personal life and professional commitments?
Kimberly: Communication and transparency are key. I make sure to “book out” with my agency for important personal commitments. Sometimes, we use a “check first” approach, allowing me to weigh my options for opportunities. A strong support system is also essential. My husband and I worked together to ensure one of us was always present for our children’s activities when they were younger. He’s always been my biggest supporter.
It’s also okay to say “no” to opportunities that don’t align with your values or goals. Years ago, after my dad passed away, I stepped away from one of my agencies because I wasn’t in the right headspace to give my best. This honesty fostered mutual respect and understanding.

PMMToday: What has been your biggest lesson in juggling career longevity with self-care and relationships?
Kimberly: The biggest lesson is navigating the peaks and valleys of this career. Constant work can be taxing, with travel, long hours, and sleep deprivation, so prioritizing self-care is crucial. During slow periods, self-doubt can creep in, but I’ve learned to use that time for personal growth, whether through hobbies, exercise, or quality time with loved ones. Consistent effort and self-care always lead to new opportunities.
PMMToday: What motivates you to stay in the modeling industry after so many years?
Kimberly: I’ve always enjoyed the collaborative nature of modeling—working with talented people to create something beautiful. It’s been a constant in my life, supporting me through motherhood, career shifts, and personal challenges. Modeling provides joy and confidence, especially during tough times, and it’s incredibly rewarding to inspire others and make them feel represented.
The connections I’ve made in the industry are invaluable. Relationships with fellow models, photographers, stylists, and other professionals have enriched my life personally and professionally.
PMMToday: What advice would you give to aspiring curvy models who are just starting out, especially those in their 30s and beyond?
Kimberly: Take the time to research agencies thoroughly, using their websites and social media. Attend open calls to gain insights and connect with potential agents. Don’t be discouraged by rejections; finding the right fit takes time.
Continuously learn about the industry and attend relevant events. Embrace your unique beauty and present yourself with confidence. Prioritize self-care, including skincare, physical health, and mental well-being. Success comes from perseverance and believing in yourself.
Keep in mind that everyone’s journey is different. Stay positive and avoid comparisons, knowing what is meant for you will be. Finally, there was something special about you that landed you that booking. Continue to let that shine, but remember professionalism and humility are keys to long term success.
