A Model and Marine Biologist Redefining Confidence, Career, and Purpose

A Model and Marine Biologist Redefining Confidence, Career, and Purpose

Model and marine biologist Nikki M is proof that women don’t have to choose one path to build a meaningful, fulfilling life.

Balancing a successful modeling career with full-time work in ocean conservation, Nikki brings intention, depth, and joy to everything she does. In this conversation with PMMToday, she reflects on finding her way into modeling, staying grounded in an image-driven industry, and redefining what confidence looks like on her own terms.

PMMToday: How did you get started in modeling?

Nikki M: I started modeling during the pandemic when a friend invited me to join her on a photoshoot. While there, I connected with the photographers and other models, and those relationships really opened the door for me. Around that same time, I created my Instagram — before that, I was completely off the grid. I’ve loved modeling ever since. One of the best parts is the incredible people I’ve met and collaborated with along the way.

PMMToday: When did you first realize modeling could be more than “taking photos”—that it could be a career?

Nikki M: That realization came when I was scouted on Instagram and signed with my mother agency, Renew Artists Hawaii. One of my early on-set experiences was working with SKIMS, which was incredibly exciting and validating. Later, signing with my dream agency, LA Models, felt like a major turning point in my career. I’m now signed with three agencies, and that really confirmed that this path was possible.

PMMToday: What has been the most challenging part of your career so far?

Nikki M: One of the biggest challenges has been feeling like I’m not “enough,” especially being 5’2” in an industry that often pushes very specific standards. I work hard to break out of the mold I’m expected to fit into and to avoid comparing myself to other models and their journeys.

PMMToday: What helps you stay grounded and confident in such an image-driven industry?

Nikki M: My full-time career as a marine biologist keeps me very grounded. My passion is helping the ocean and marine life, and I currently work as a scientific diver for the State of Hawaii. Modeling is something I choose to do because I genuinely enjoy it — I love creating art and connecting with people. Staying vegan, exercising, practicing daily positive affirmations, and having over five years of modeling experience also help me keep things in perspective and not sweat the small stuff.

PMMToday: What does body confidence mean to you today?

Nikki M: Body confidence means not being so hard on myself or trying to force my body to be a certain way. As women, our bodies naturally fluctuate, and I try not to attach my worth to how my body looks at any given moment. I want to enjoy my life and appreciate my body for everything it allows me to do.

PMMToday: Who inspires you in the fashion or creative industry, and why?

Nikki M: I’m inspired by so many creatives, especially designers like Giovanna Engelbert, Jeniece Blanchet, and Betsey Johnson. They’re incredibly innovative and fearless in their creativity. You can tell they genuinely have fun creating art, and that energy really resonates with me.

PMMToday: What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue modeling?

Nikki M: Take photos of yourself — lots of them — and don’t be afraid to ask photographers to collaborate. Share your work online and find something meaningful to stand for on your platform. Be yourself, don’t internalize rejection, and never accept defeat. Just keep moving forward.

PMMToday: Where do you see yourself in the next few years?

Nikki M: I see myself stepping into a leadership role within the field of marine biology. I also see myself DJ-ing and producing music, which I’ve been getting deeply into and absolutely love.

PMMToday: What would you like to be known for beyond modeling?

Nikki M: Beyond modeling, I want to be known for my work protecting the ocean and advocating for animals. I spent four years working with stranded whales and dolphins, helping test for diseases to determine causes of death. Now, I work as a scientific diver removing invasive species and restoring native coral reefs across the Hawaiian Islands. I also hope to inspire others to go vegan so we can reduce animal cruelty and help protect the environment and our oceans.
